 This braid crown was inspired by eastern Congo’s Mangbetu people, Farinah detailed in an Instagram post. The style was created to accentuate the My broom broke so now I ride horse shirt and I love this elongation of the skull, which represented royalty and was a status symbol.  With every style, Farinah and Beyoncé sought to offer insight into African culture. Horned heads and lip plates worn by Beyoncé were inspired by the Dinka and Mursi tribes, who wear them as symbols of prestige and honor. The conical braided and beaded style highlighted against a portrait-studio background while Beyoncé sang “Brown Skin Girl” paid homage to a popular ’70s look worn by Nigerian women to special events. And with her braided Bantu knots worn during the song “Already”—the middle one in the shape of an Egyptian ankh—Beyoncé paid respect to South Africa’s Zulu people.
